Ten DeWitt Elementary School art students were selected to showcase their work in the Arkansas Art Educators Eastern Regional Art Show: Evelyn Roach, "Central American Tortuga" (Kindergarten - First Place - Best in Show); Lillyana Christian, "Monarch Butterfly" (First grade - First Place - Best in Show); Jasper Gardner, "Dia de los Muertos Sugar Skull" (Second grade - Second Place); Hadley Gaskill, "Moth with Feathery Antennae" (Second grade - First Place - Best in Show); Lakeland Kimbrell, "Self-portrait Collage" (Third grade - Second Place); Armani Clay, "Green Frog in Arkansas" (Third grade - Fourth Place); Cooper Hornbeck, "Self-Portrait Collage" (Fourth grade - Second Place); Tristan Goodell, "Underwater" (Fifth grade - Third Place); Olivia McCarley, "Folk Art Bird Inspired by Fernando Llort" (Fifth grade - First Place - Best in Show); and Saint Gable, "Self-Portrait Collage" (Fifth grade - Honorable Mention).
It is an honor to be selected as each school in the region is only allowed to send up to 10 pieces of art. Six DES students attended the show at East Arkansas Community College in Forest City, Arkansas, with their families. Students were able to view their artwork in the gallery, and then they were recognized on stage during the awards ceremony.
“It is very rewarding to see the students recognized in this way,” said art teacher Joli Holzhauer. “Each student is so proud to see their work hanging in the gallery. They see their creativity on display, and they feel like their work matters.”
The artwork selected as “Best in Show” will move on to the AAE State Art Show at the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library in Little Rock this summer.
